Daily Deployment Frequency: Devices were removed during the morning session and returned to charge during the lunch hour. After lunch the devices were deployed again and returned after the last class of the day. A complete deployment cycle occurred 2 times per day.

Cart:
  • Using a cart, the teacher deployed each device to every student. It was shown to take 3.5 minutes to deploy all 32 devices to every student in the classroom. Return time equaled 5 minutes to return all devices to the teacher and plug the devices back into the cart. The total time for 2 complete deployments was 17 minutes. Please note that we used the teacher deployment method with the cart since having the students pickup and drop off at the cart (without the teacher’s supervision) resulted in longer deployment times.
    Calculating that there are 200 school days each year x 17 minutes per day for device deployment equals 56.66 labor hours used per classroom per year.
    Calculating that the average hourly pay for a teacher is $25/hr – the total yearly cost is $1,416.50 to deploy devices using a cart.

Cord Replacement Frequency: Devices were removed during the morning session and returned to charge during the lunch hour. After lunch the devices were deployed again and returned after the last class of the day. A complete deployment cycle occurred 2 times per day. Cord wear and tangle fray was measured during each deployment and it was determined that 2 power cords would need replacement during the year using the cart and .5 cords would need replacement using the PowerGistics Towers.

Cart:
  • Calculating that each cord cost on average $20 x 2 cords needing replacement – would equal $40 for replacement cost.
    Calculating that the average hourly pay for an IT Director is $35/hr – the time to order and replace both cords would be one hour totaling $35.
    Total cord replacement cost would be $75.00 per year for cart use.

  • Calculating that each cord cost on average $20 x .5 cords needing replacement – would equal $10 for replacement cost.

Cord tangle and cord management was measured during each deployment and it was determined that 8 min per week would be needed to untangle and properly manage the power cords in the cart versus 1 min per week for the PowerGistics Tower.

Cart:
  • Calculating that the average hourly pay for a teacher is $25/hr x 8 min per week for cord management – weekly cost would equal $3.36.
    Total cord management cost would be $134.40 per year for cart use.

Device Loss Savings

Device Loss Frequency: It was established that carts have a device loss ratio of ½ device per 32 devices stored each year. This ratio was based on IT Director sampling across the nation. They attributed this loss due to the closed design of the cart, which does not allow the teacher to visually check that each device is returned after a deployment session.

Cart:

  • Calculating that the average device loss was ½ device per year – and that the device cost is $375/device – and that it would take the IT Director 1 hr of time to inventory, order and configure the device – the total cost of device loss would be $222.50/year per cart.
